Mr. Newman’s expression was slightly sorrowful as he revealed, “As a babysitter.”
Zora scoffed and was about to refuse when he made the greatest revelation. “But you would have to marry him. It’s simple. I want you to marry my son for one year. I will pay you handsomely for it.”
Zora didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. This was the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard. After experiencing a loveless marriage firsthand, she was not willing to make that mistake again.
Not even someone as powerful as Mr. Newman could make her consider it. “Mr. Newman, I think you have the wrong person. I’m neither ready to be a babysitter nor get married. I’m sorry, but you just wasted your time.”
She opened the car door, about to step out when he explained calmly, “My son had an accident and is in a vegetative state. Before that, a girl was pregnant for him but died giving birth to his child on the same day he had the accident.”
Zora paused, puzzled by the revelation. This situation seemed more worrisome than what had transpired between her and Ezra. Seeing that he had her attention, Mr. Newman continued to speak, so Zora closed the car door, giving him her full attention.
“The pregnancy was a mistake, and we found out too late. We were only informed about it when he was headed to the hospital. We didn’t know the details as he has been in a coma for four months now.”
“How old is your son?” Zora asked, finding the situation a little disturbing. It felt like a father finding a wife for a son in a coma. That meant Zora wouldn't have to worry about physical intimacy or giving her body away as she did with Ezra.
