"Evelyn, are you alright?" Amelia's worried voice made the omega snap out of her thoughts. She was staring mindlessly out the window when Amelia entered her room.
"You seemed to be in deep thought," the tan-skinned doctor commented, simultaneous amusement and concern slipping through her voice.
"I... It was nothing..." Evelyn picked at a hangnail, her face burning a bit as she ducked down. She still felt a little awkward talking to people, no matter how much Amelia did to make her feel comfortable.
Evelyn couldn't see this place as her home, no matter how much she tried to. She would never feel warmth in this place for as long as her mate didn't accept her…
"How's your fever?" Amelia asked. Her hand was immediately on Evelyn's forehead to check her temperature.
Evelyn's face burned even hotter. She wasn't used to people coming so close to her and touching her so gently. Especially not people as beautiful as Amelia.
"It's okay, I think. I feel a lot better now," she replied, her voice low.
Amelia nodded briskly. "You should still drink herbal tea, though. It's good for your health." She smiled fondly at the omega.
Evelyn was about to respond when she glimpsed a fluffy blonde head peeking at her from the door. She leaned over and looked past Amelia to get a better view, but the person had disappeared from sight.
The scent of roses filled the air, a refreshing aroma. It must be another omega.
Amelia was watching Evelyn with amusement on her face. But when the scent of roses reached her, she let out a snort and rolled her eyes. She knew exactly who it was.
"Rain, come inside and stop hiding. We know you're there," Amelia called out in a singsong voice. She waited for a few seconds, staring at the half-opened door. No one came. "Rain!" Her voice was a bit firmer this time.
After a few seconds, the blond poked his head inside again. He gave a short gasp before stepping inside the room. He was pouting in a mock-cute manner.
Evelyn couldn't help but stare at the guy. He looked like an angel from heaven. The blonde hair, sparkling blue eyes, and pale smooth skin made him look so ethereal. It was obvious from his features he was an omega. Male omegas were rare.
"It's rude to spy on someone like this, Rain," Amelia scolded, but her voice was light. The boy continued to pout.
"I was just curious!" He huffed, before immediately changing his tone and demeanor. "B-but I'm sorry if I violated your privacy! I didn't mean to pry."
"You could have just come in, you dolt." The doctor chuckled and ruffled the guy's fluffy hair, which made him giggle. "This is Evelyn, the Alpha's mate." Evelyn could only watch as Amelia introduced her. She smiled nervously.
"Oh! Hi, I'm Rain..." The boy waved at her shyly. Then he leaned in close, his big doe eyes sparkling with excitement. "So you're going to be the next luna? It's the first time an omega is going to be the luna, I'm so happy!"
Evelyn's smile wavered when she heard his words. She gulped, not knowing how to answer. "I... I'm not..."
Fortunately, Amelia intervened. "She just got here yesterday. Let's talk about the luna thing later." She flicked Rain's forehead, and he winced. Evelyn sighed, thanking the doctor with a small smile.
"Sorry..." Rain pouted again. He sure acted childishly…
"It's okay..." Evelyn twiddled her thumbs a little before asking what she was meaning to ask.
"How old are you?" Rain instantly brightened at the question.
"I'm seventeen, eighteen soon, in a few months!" He chirped with a big smile adorning his face.
"He's excited because he'll be able to find his mate soon," Amelia explained with a chuckle. Rain blushed bright red and threw his head back, giving himself over to laughter.
Evelyn couldn't help but laugh along as well. She just met Rain and yet he made her feel comfortable right away. He must be a fun friend to have.
"Your mate is going to be so lucky to have you," Evelyn said to him.
"Thank you..." Rain blushed and smiled, playing with his fingers.
Then a high-pitched voice calling Rain made all three turn towards the door. He gasped.
"Oh no, I have to go. I was supposed to help Melissa make a new soup! Bye, new Luna, I'll come back in a few minutes!" He shouted as he hurriedly ran out the door.
Amelia smirked fondly after him. "He's beautiful, isn't he?" The doctor asked Evelyn.
"Yes, he is..." Evelyn agreed. She hesitated. She had another question, but she was scared of looking rude.
Oh, well. She pushed through. "Was Rain... born here?"
"Yes. I understand your confusion, though. His mother was Korean. The former Alpha's friend was her mate, they found each other when the Alpha and his friend visited her pack. She moved here with him and joined our pack..." Amelia's voice trailed off, thinking about the past. "Unfortunately, they were both killed in a rogue attack when Rain was only four years old. It was terrible..."
Evelyn was shocked to hear about the tragedy. The omega looked so happy and carefree... No one could say he went through something so traumatic.
"Rain was raised by the former Luna. She loves him like her own son. He's so precious..." Amelia sighed, looking down. "But things aren't easy for him. The pack members are not too fond of him because he's a male omega. Then most of the omegas, on the other hand, dislike him because they're jealous of how beautiful he is. He spends most of his time alone because he's always ignored. I hope he finds his mate soon and they treat him the way he deserves."
Evelyn was quiet. How terrible. She hoped Rain would find a good mate, not like her own. Instead, she wanted him to be with someone who would love and cherish him.
Amelia shook her head and waved her hands in the air. "Urgh! Sorry for telling you all these sad things. I know you're already disturbed." She knew all about Evelyn's awkward situation with the Alpha. But even if she wasn't informed, it would have been obvious there was a problem. Neither one was behaving the way usual newfound mates did.
"No, no! It's alright," Evelyn was quick to reassure the doctor. After all, she didn't want to seem ungrateful for all the help. "But... would it be okay... would you mind... if I asked you something?" The omega fiddled with her fingers nervously.
"Go ahead, I don't mind." The doctor chuckled at the girl's nervousness.
"Umm... Did you find your mate?"
Amelia smiled at the question. "Yes, I did. He's one of the pack warriors." Her eyes lit up as she talked about her mate.
"How... How was it before you found out you two were mates?"
"It was like magic... I felt complete the moment I took in his heavenly scent. I knew I would love him forever when I first saw him smile at me." She sighed dreamily, making Evelyn's lips twitch. "Urgh! I must sound so cheesy!" Amelia slapped a palm over her face. "Oh! Speaking of mates, I wanted to tell you something."
Evelyn fought a frown against the sudden change of expression on the doctor's face.
What was wrong?
"Since you found your mate, your heat might arrive soon..." The doctor told her. "So you should take extra good care of yourself."
Evelyn paled when she heard the words. "W-what?"
"I know you're nervous." Amelia stared at her sympathetically. "But I had to tell you this so you could be prepared."
"B-but-but when? C-can you tell me when it's going to h-happen?" Evelyn couldn't help but return to her old habits of stuttering and stumbling over her words.
"I can't tell you exactly when... it depends on the bond you have with your mate. If you two spend too much time apart, your body and your wolves will force you two together by going into heat or rut," the doctor explained.
Evelyn gulped. She had a feeling this was going to cause a lot of problems.
