Hesitantly, Evelyn stood in front of the door, not knowing what to do. She was afraid of what her mate would say. She had lost all hope of being accepted by him.
What if he didn't like her? What if he was already married?
What if he rejected her?
Worry and alarms shot through Evelyn's veins. She bunched the fabric of her sweater tightly in her hands. It took her a few minutes of breathing in and out slowly to help her muster up the courage to proceed.
Taking one last deep breath, Evelyn slowly raised her hand to knock.
"Come in." A deep voice came from inside the room, making her hand pause in mid-air. The omega gasped and stepped back. How on earth did he know she was outside his door?
In truth, the alpha had smelled the presence of the girl the second she came into his proximity, an alluring scent of jasmine too strong to ignore. He was waiting for the omega to knock, but spoke up when he lost his patience.
Evelyn opened the door cautiously before peeking inside. The scent of her mate hit the omega like a wave. She inhaled deeply, closing her eyes as she enjoyed the comfort it gave her.
The alpha cleared his throat, and Evelyn snapped back into reality. She stared at the man sitting on his office chair, who was looking back at her with intensely blue eyes.
He wore a black T-shirt and blue jeans, his muscles straining under the thin fabric as he crossed his arms. Alphas were naturally strong and muscular. Having a domineering aura was expected of an Alpha, to be able to stand out from other ranks. However, Evelyn could sense there was something different about the man in front of her. He was commanding, sure, but there was also a dangerous presence surrounding him. It wouldn't be wise to mess with him.
Evelyn squeezed her hands tightly together, protected by the sleeves of her sweater. She kept her head down low. Judging by their last encounter, it would be a bad idea to make eye contact with him again.
He stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. Evelyn winced at the noise and took a step back. What was he planning? What did he want?
The alpha's expression grew even darker when he witnessed Evelyn's reaction. "Stay there," he snarled, his voice sounding so arresting and powerful, Evelyn almost cowered in submission.
He strode towards her. "What's your name, omega?" He stopped a foot away from Evelyn, hovering over her.
Evelyn kept her gaze downcast, too nervous to face him. Her throat closed. Not interacting with people for a long time caused the omega to forget how to respond properly. Her anxiety wasn't helping, either. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
"Answer me," the Alpha commanded.
"E-Evelyn." Her eyes were still trained on the floor. She could not look at him.
"What were you doing in the forest?"
"I-I live t-there."
He cocked an eyebrow at her. "I have never seen you there before."
"W-well... It's p-probably because I move around a lot," was her response. Evelyn peeked at the alpha through her long lashes, but quickly regretted it. He was staring at her with hateful eyes.
"Look at me." He gripped her chin and tilted her face upwards. Evelyn felt herself shiver from the touch even though it was a cold and hurtful gesture.
"Do you know how to fight?" Evelyn wanted to shake her head, but the strong grip on her chin prevented it.
"N-No," she whispered.
The alpha grunted in annoyance. "Do you even have a wolf? I can't sense it."
Evelyn gulped, not knowing how to respond. She didn't have an inner wolf, making her even weaker than other omegas. Without one, she wasn't able to shift and fight in her wolf form. She took a shaky breath as the grip on her chin grew tighter. "I don't."
"So you can't shift?"
Evelyn felt her vision blur as she replied, "N-No."
The alpha frowned, dissatisfaction and anger crawling over his perfect features. Evelyn whimpered. "Can you be any more pathetic? Such a useless omega." He scoffed.
He leaned down to whisper in the girl's ear. "I already knew you were weak, but I didn't imagine you were this pitiful." Evelyn let her tears roll down as soon as she heard those words. She had expected this to happen, but it still hurt. The girl bit her lips and closed her eyes.
The alpha stepped back, rubbing his temple in irritation. "Where is your family?" He asked, frowning as he looked at the girl.
"I-I... I'm an o-orphan."
"Did they leave you or die?"
"They died, all right?!" Evelyn cried, recalling the memories of her father. Though terrified, she couldn't take it anymore after such an awful question.
She never talked about her father or even thought about the terrible incident. She didn't have the courage to recall those memories on her own. Her nightmares did a good job of doing so already.
"Stop crying, you're annoying me," the alpha spat. His anger filled the room, suffocating the omega. "Why are you crying, huh?" He tugged on the omega's blonde locks harshly. "I'm the one who got a pathetic creature like you as my mate. As an Alpha, no less! Stop acting so dramatic."
This was the end for Evelyn. The last flame of hope she had hidden in the corner of her heart effortlessly died from the cold words her mate threw at her.
Quickly wiping her tears, Evelyn stood up straight. She had to stop crying. She knew she'd never be accepted. She'd never be anything important to him other than a burden he had to bear for the rest of his life. It hurt her to know this, but she had to accept it as the truth.
"You can't be my Luna." The alpha leaned back on the edge of his desk, calm and unbothered by his words. Evelyn wanted to cry and beg the alpha to not reject her, but she knew it would only make the alpha hate her more.
"A weak Luna means a weak Alpha. I can't be perceived as weak just because my mate is an omega," he continued. "My father did so much to ensure our Pack was one of the most powerful Packs in the world. You becoming the Luna will destroy everything."
"S-sorry," Evelyn muttered instinctively. She didn't even know why she was saying sorry. The hurt inside her was growing into a patch of resentment now. She didn't ask to be his mate. It wasn't something she could control!
But she hoped her apology would appease her mate in some way. At least he would know she didn't choose this.
The alpha scoffed, turning towards the omega with an annoyed look. "Sorry? What are you sorry about? Sorry for being so weak?" He strode towards the omega and roughly pulled her to flush against his muscular chest.
Evelyn yelped in surprise.
The alpha's irritation mounted when she refused to meet his eyes. He gripped her chin again and forced her to look at him.
Fear was swimming in Evelyn's eyes, green as the forest she used to call home. For a minute, she forgot about the situation she was in as the Alpha's captivating blue eyes gazed back at her. They seemed to flow like the waves of the ocean.
She had to admit the man was gorgeous. He had sharp and perfect features. She bet he turned heads every time he passed people by.
Evelyn could sense his breathing and heartbeat because of being so close to him. He felt so warm... and she wanted to stay in his embrace forever.
If you could call it an embrace.
A light brush of fingers down her neck brought Evelyn back to reality. Her eyes widened. "You have nothing useful to me other than your body," he whispered in her ear, leaning down to brush his nose against the crook of her neck. The alpha sighed, taking in the scent of jasmine. His hands grew tighter around the omega as he brought her closer to him.
Evelyn didn't know what was happening. She was confused by her mate's behavior. The alpha seemed so mad just a minute ago.
'Are my pheromones affecting him?' she thought as the alpha began to explore her neck, nudging her with his nose. The cinnamon and honey scent of her mate was affecting her too as time passed. She had to get him to come back to his senses before whatever this was turned into something else.
"A-Alpha?" Evelyn murmured, too afraid to raise her voice.
That seemed to do it. Blinking, he immediately pushed the girl off of him, making her stumble back with a yelp.
The alpha's eyes turned dark, and he rubbed his temples. He cursed under his breath.
"Get out," he spat, his voice cold as ice. "And don't come in front of me unless I call for you."
Evelyn didn't look up. Her eyes stayed on the floor as she muttered a quiet 'yes' before sprinting to the door, eager to escape from the Alpha's suffocating presence.
The omega broke down as soon as she got out of the room. She recalled every word her mate said to her.
'At least he didn't reject me,' she thought as a sigh slipped past her lips. 'I want to be strong... I want to win my alpha's heart..."
