The drums from outside only made Delphine ever more nervous. She paced from one room to the other. The race was going to start soon, and Damien’s mother was expecting her to participate, which was impossible.
There were only two people who knew about Delphine’s wolf, and that was Lila and Damien; every other person had no idea that the person they were one day going to crown their Luna hadn’t seen her wolf yet. “This is terrible, where is Damien?” She let out a frustrated groan. “Maybe I should just run away.” But then she thought about it and realized that would be dangerous. It was the full moon, and if she left the pack, there was a huge chance that she would run into rogues, especially wild ones who wouldn’t think twice about tearing her apart.
Damien had told her to wait while he went to speak to his parents. She didn’t know what he was telling them, but she hoped it was enough to get her out of the race. When she heard the door opening, she prayed it was Dylan, but it was Lila. “Delphine?”
“Yes.” Delphine rushed to her friend. “Did you see Damien? Did the Queen send you to get me? It’s time for the race, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is; everyone is out. They were going to start when the Queen noticed you weren’t there. She stopped the race before it began, announcing that you said you would love to join in the race. Then she sent me to get you.”
“Great, just great.” Delphine rubbed her clammy hands on her jeans. “When I embarrass myself in front of everyone, Damien should know it’s his fault.”
“Come on, you are going to be fine. It’s just a race, and I bet you are going to find the cup. Where did you say that I found the last one?” she asked with a large grin.
“Yeah, I was told congrats.” Lila nodded with a proud smile. “But what do you mean by just a race? Have you forgotten that I haven’t seen my wolf? How do I run with other wolves in my human form?”
