I only nodded and took deep breaths.
"Alright Evelyn, I want you to take in short deep breaths and when I ask you to push, you push as hard as you can," the doctor ordered, and I nodded.
"OK. One, two, three… Push!" the doctor instructed, and I pushed with all my might, the pain causing me to dig my nails into Kayden's hand as my head rose from the pillow. The pain was indescribable, and I wanted to scream my head off, but then again, I didn't have that luxury, so I could only open my mouth wide.
I tried to direct all the pain to Kayden's hand linked with mine, pinching his skin so hard that it was sure to draw blood, but he didn't pull away or even shake once; he only smiled at me instead and kept encouraging me. It would have brought a smile to my face if I wasn't in so much pain.
"Stop!" the doctor instructed, and my head fell back on the pillow, and I breathed heavily.
"You're doing great, Evelyn. I can already see the baby's head. Just keep taking deep breaths and push when I tell you to," the doctor commended me, and I nodded.
"It's OK, Evelyn, everything will be fine," I heard Kayden say once more, and it was just the reassurance I needed.
"One… Two… Three… Push," the doctor called, and I gave it my all. After the second push, I could feel the baby at my cervix, which was stretching painfully wide to accommodate my young. The effort I'd put into pushing had left me dizzy, and I could see stars around me. I started thinking that I'd lose consciousness again. I tried to slow down my breathing a bit.
