“Kylie, can you take these up to the CEO’s office?” Eliza’s voice drips with feigned sweetness as she shoves a thick folder into my hands. I blink at her, caught off guard.
“The CEO?” I repeat, feeling my gut tighten.
The CEO of Bennington Corp is practically a ghost — serious, private, and never seen outside the sanctuary of his office. No one has seen his face or knows who he is. The idea of intruding on his space makes my skin prickle with nerves.
Eliza rolls her eyes. “He’s not there,” she says, exasperated. “Just drop them on his desk. It’s very important.”
“Are you sure I should be going up there?” I ask, hesitation clear in my voice. Something about this feels all kinds of wrong.
Her glare is like a slap. “You want to keep this job, don’t you?” she snaps, her tone leaving no room for argument.
I swallow hard, my gut still churning, but I nod. I don’t really have a choice. Clutching the files tightly, I head for the elevator, feeling dread coil in the pit of my stomach.
The hallway outside the CEO’s office is eerily quiet. The kind of quiet that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. I tiptoe forward, my heart pounding as I reach for the doorknob.
