My heart pounds as we pull up to Alex’s house. I was hoping he wouldn’t be home, but no such luck.
His car is in the driveway, and I can feel the tension knotting in my stomach.
I have to face him.
I walk to the door, engagement ring clutched tightly in my palm, ready to end this once and for all. But before I can reach for my keys, the door swings open, and there he is.
“Well, look who’s come crawling back,” Alex sneers. “Knew it was only a matter of time.”
His smug face makes my stomach turn, but I don’t let it show. “I’m just here to get my stuff and return this.” I hold out the ring, expecting him to snatch it away.
But his grin fades, replaced by something dark and unsettling.
“I’m not taking that back,” he says, stepping closer. “We’re getting married.”
