I untie my hands, feeling embarrassed. “I’m sorry. It’s just…a lot has happened in the past 24 hours. I got dumped by my fiancé, kicked out of my home, lost my job…and then I married…you.”
Benedict puts his fork down and takes my hand. His touch is warm, and a jolt of heat travels up my arm.
“Don’t apologize. You’ve been through a lot. And I know what Alex did must have hurt. It’s natural for you to be sad.”
I shake my head defiantly. “I’m not sad. I may be a nice girl from the Midwest, but once someone breaks my trust — I kick them out of my heart, for good. Alex is dead to me.”
Benedict looks at me, impressed. “So then I guess the reason you didn’t sleep well is…me?”
I blush. He’s right. “It’s just…I’m married to a stranger. We know nothing about each other.”
“Then let’s fix that,” he says, as if it’s the simplest thing in the world. “20 Questions.”
