"There are lots of good people in the world who suffer unfairly, and there are some assholes who make tons of money doing stupid shit like exchanging stock or opening hotels. They throw extravagant parties on yachts for no reason, they fly planes for hobbies, and they buy art to impress people they don't even actually like. Some of them are just unlucky in love, and they want to pretend that they have it with someone young and beautiful, but they know deep down it's all just a fantasy. But others are just cocky assholes who just want someone to impress their friends with. And if those assholes are stupid enough to offer me a bunch of money to pretend to be their girlfriend, then I'd be an idiot not to take it. Because if I don't, someone else will."
I nod my head as I listen, it makes sense once she says it out loud. I'm not a bad person for wanting my life to be a little bit easier, and it's not necessarily bad if someone is offering their help with that.
"Yeah, you're right, I just don't get why Rhodes has to do it this way. He's attractive, he's smart, and he has plenty of money; there must be millions of women who would love to be with him. Why does he want to do it this way?"
Poppy shrugs her shoulders, she's stumped for a reason just as much as I am. "Maybe he's not looking for love? He just wants somebody on his arm."
"So why does he seem to want to win me over? Why take me to lunch and try to get to know me? Why kiss me? Lory said he looked at my profile and saw my photo and wanted to meet me immediately. What did she put in there that would make it so appealing to him?" Poppy stops in her tracks as she walks beside me, a suddenly sad, empty look spreading across her face.
"Your profile..."
"Yeah, what about it?" I ask her, her eyes pour into mine with a look of sympathy. She seems to be having trouble finding the words.
"When we were in Grace's office and she made you fill out your forms, you wrote down that you were a virgin..." she says slowly.
