"You are lucky Larry isn't back from his trip," Caroline says stiffly. "He's taking the next flight back, but you better be gone before he arrives. He's fuming. And he's hell-bent on having you locked up."
"That's a lie," I say, but deep down, the thought that it might be true sickens me. In reality, it's possible that Larry will do that to me because I know how much he loves his son and how long it has taken us to get to this safe place.
"Stick around and you'll find out," Caroline taunts me.
The rain continues to fall heavily.
I throw my head back and laugh, but tears are still spilling from my eyes as I do not know what to say exactly. It feels so strange.
I say, "If you believed I kidnapped Larry, then why aren't you asking me to bring him back? If I leave, aren't you afraid Larry will not come back? Oh, I forgot. You both know what has happened to Larry. Where is he?"
"Do you have proof of that?" Mrs. Kensington asks, and Caroline laughs too.
