Finally, when Kael finishes, Lucian stands, his movements slow and deliberate as he addresses the room. “The vision you’ve presented is… ambitious,” he says, his voice calm but edged with skepticism. “But ambition isn’t enough. Shadow Ridge’s values may not align with those of every pack here. I’m not ready to tie Darkfang’s fate to this—yet.”
Kael’s jaw tightens, but he nods curtly. “Your hesitation is noted, Alpha Blackwood. But I believe time will show you the value of what I’m offering.”
Lucian inclines his head slightly, his green eyes flicking briefly to me before he sits.
The meeting ends with no resolution, the tension thick as the Alphas disperse. Kael’s fury radiates off him as he stalks out, and I feel the weight of Lucian’s gaze one last time before he disappears into the crowd.
LATER THAT NIGHT
Kael’s POV
The moon casts a pale light through the windows of the Governor’s Mansion, its silver glow spilling across the room as I pace near the hearth, my hands clenched at my sides. My wolf growls restlessly in my chest, echoing the storm in my mind.
“Who does Lucian Blackwood think he is?” I snap, my voice low but sharp. “To undermine me like that. In front of everyone.”
