“Besides, I don’t let go of treasure.”
I glance up at him, and the look on his face seems sincere. Even though I barely know this guy, his words warm me. Treasure? What does he mean by that?
“She’s my fiancée!” Alex snaps back.
I stare at him, shocked and repulsed by his words. The audacity of this man!
“I’m not your fiancée, Alex! Or did you forget the part where you cheated on me?!” I scream, my own voice rising over the roar of the helicopter.
Alex’s face contorts with a mix of rage and desperation. He reaches out for me, trying to grab my hand and pull me toward him. “I didn’t mean any of it!” he shouts, his voice cracking. “I take it all back, baby. You know I care about you. Please, just let me explain.”
Benedict’s expression hardens, his eyes narrowing. “If you cared about her, you wouldn’t have publicly humiliated her,” he fires back, and for a moment, I can hardly breathe.
Is Benedict...defending me? Alex never did that.
